Sound the Deep Waters © 1998 by Izolda TrakhtenbergThis
title of this song was inspired by the title of a book of Victorian
Women's poetry that I was reading (it's also a line out of a Christina
Rosetti poem). These women didn't get a lot of press back then,
but now, their work is being rediscovered. While I was reading
the poems, I started thinking about the fact that people in that era
had some beliefs that some might consider superstitions today.
They believed in ghosts and fairies and magic. As I was reading
the poems, I started wondering if anyone back then ever questioned
just exactly what it was that the fairies did with their time.
So, I decided to write a song about the Gentle Folk and just exactly
what it is that they might do at night while the rest of us are snug
in our beds.
Roam the coasline all night long Sound the deep waters with a siren's call Raise the moon and watch it fall Know
the wisdom of a flowing brook
Laugh
with children as their fancied mate Gossamer
petals fan the night's air Chorus:
