Lama in the Basement © Izolda Trakhtenberg

This song is based on an impending true story. My boss and friend, Elissa told me that the Lama she met in Nepal might be coming to visit and that he'll be staying in their beautiful, peaceful meditation space in the basement. I immediately thought that the phrase "Lama in the basement" had to become a song. And I woke up the next morning thinking this one. Enjoy.

A gentle man from far off lands
    He’s spent his life content
He smiles at people’s spiteful acts
    And quiets malcontents
And now he’s come to our land’s shores
To stay in my friends home
    What an opportunity
    Enlightenment here I come

    Lama in the basement
    He’s got wisdom to dispense
I’m ready for my share of it
    So spare me the suspense
    Lama in the basement
With a soul as pure as snow
    Maybe that’s my problem then
    Perhaps I should just go

I want to sit beside his feet
There’s so much there to learn
Like the quiet heart, the silent mind
    The beauty of fern
Why can’t I just get it done
I’ve been here for an hour
    Enlightenment takes longer than
    I’ve ever really known

    Chorus

    I’ve done Oming meditation
So why am I still stuck?
    Thought it would be easier
    Like being lightning struck
    I never truly realized that
    It’s a lifelong course
That gives this man a simple life
    With spirit at its source

    Lama in the basement
    He’s got wisdom to dispense
I’m ready for my share of it
    So spare me the suspense
    Lama in the basement
    He follows his own road
Perhaps I will seek my own path
    And find my inner glow
