Headed For A Swim © 2002 by Izolda Trakhtenberg

This piece was written on a whim in October. It all came out in a rush of brisk air as if I were exhaling it after holding my breath for a long time. I'm still not certain whether it will become a full-fledged song or live its life as a poem. I'll let you know. Oh, and the song is listed as part of an anthology of poetry and art on the website, "This Journey." Check out the incredible artwork that goes along with the song at http://thisjourney.bravepages.com/Var/Swim.htm

    Headed For A Swim

Walking on my own through all of life's decisions
Stepping over pools of hurt and skirting thoughts and feelings

Instead of preparation for whatever lies ahead
I face each day with false bravado and a secret spark of dread

I long for all the times we touched on mountaintops, in waterfalls
When joyous love reflected off the glistening snow and eagle calls

And yet I know the time has come to dive into the tide
The fear and echoed pain of old they will not be denied

For giving them such power as to make me run and hide
Means knots that hold me bound and gagged will never be untied

I know that you can't love another til you love yourself
And that's the toughest lesson for your spirit and your health

How do you change perspective, then, and gain a sense of self
And not think little lies and place your feelings on the shelf

Forsaking all your heart's desires and leaving passions (yearnings) idle
Means yielding up the rapturous life to which we are entitled

And so my friend I leave you now to live your life and take your bows
I'm bound for greater glories never skirting whens and hows

Instead of running chased by fears a scardey-cat, a frightened deer
A dolphin in the sea I'll be in water deep and crystal clear

I'm taking off my worry suit and I'm headed for a swim
Yes, I'm taking off my worry suit and I'm headed for a swim
