Thor, Loki, and Seegee

After a long bout with bone cancer, our beloved fluffy kitty Belly died on June 8, 1998. Well, what I decided to do was to wait one full moon cycle and then eight weeks from that full moon and then go to get an eight week old boy kitty. On the new moon in June, something told me to figure out when that date would be. The next full moon was July 9th and eight weeks from that date was September 3, which is the exact date I got Belly eleven years ago.

Knowing that I was doing the right thing, I was content to wait until September 3 at which time I'd go off to the animal shelter and find an eight week old boy kitty. The week before we were due to go to the shelter, some friends told us that other friends had had a real kitten explosion on their farm. Knowing the Waffs as well as we do, we knew that we'd find our boy there. So, on September 3rd, Rich and I and our dear friend and fellow cat lover, Alec, went to the Waff's farm. (Alec came with me originally when I got Belly eleven years ago.) I had put on a little medicine bag that had some of Belly's fur and some other things in it to see if any of the kittens we played with would want to play with it.

We got there and looked at what we thought were all the kittens, but then we realized that we'd missed some who were sleeping on the kitchen floor. We found Belly's doppelganger sleeping with a bunch of his brothers and sisters. Out of the thirty kittens I played with that day only this little long-haired orange boy paid any attention to the bag at all, and he went straight for it. So, not only does he look like him, but he has all of Belly's mannerisms and sounds as well. He was skinny and sickly and had a terrible eye infection, but we had to take him home anyway.

So, we thought we'd found the one and were ready to leave, but then we made the mistake of sitting down at the kitchen table and chatting. Well, this really beautiful brown girl who was really small and had a terrible eye infection as well crawled over to me, put her head in my hand and fell asleep. I had no choice. We had to take her too. We named her Seagee (or C.G.) for Chocolate Girl. She's not so brown anymore and she's more like a tempest than like chocolate so she may fill us in on her new name at some point.

Seagee

So, that's two kittens - only one to go. While we were sitting at the table, this orange shape sort of slithered and melted from the table and onto Rich's lap. He was older than the other two and he had spirit and energy and he adored Rich from the start. He was also the one who grabbed the cat toy we brought in to play with the kittens, ran outside with it, and wouldn't let anyone else play with it. He's a pur monster. He purrs so hard that the vet sometimes can't hear his heartbeat. He has a heart of gold and bright red hair and we named him Thor.

Here's another of Thor. It's a bit more recent.

Since Thor and the other little orangeish boy were half brothers (same dad: a big orange tom) we had to name the little boy Loki.

Here's another of an older Loki.

We thought we were getting one and instead we ended up with three kittens that day. It worked out great; we love them all. They had a bunch of health problems when we got them and Seagee almost died, but they're getting healthy and have a bunch of energy. And hopefully, soon, we can integrate them into the rest of the house and then the fireworks can really begin!

*********************************************

Today, we honor the end of an era. On Setpember 3rd, 1998, we got the TLS kitties who were the three we got after the beloved boy Belly died. In other places, I honor that story. This one, however, is sad and yet appropriate. Seegie was hit and killed by a car on November 1 (the day of the dead) in 1999. Thor was hit and killed by a car on the evening of January 31st 2003. And early this morning, our beloved Loki, the last of these three magnificent kitties died due to his heart condition and tumorous growth on his lungs. He was a beautiful and wonderful boy and we will miss him dearly.

Normally I keep very good track, internally, of where the moon is. This month I've been a bit distracted. So, talking to a dear friend tonight, I was told that today was full moon (EDT ~9:29 am).

I am not surprised, then, that Loki died last night (or early morning). He was born on July 9th 1998 ( a full moon) and we got him on September 3rd eight weeks later. It makes sense that the Moon was there to guide him to the Summerland today. There are many coincidences in this world, but this, to me, is not one of them.

Safe journey, little one. 9/28/04
