Wonder Why © 2003 by Izolda Trakhtenberg

This song is about obstacles to peace and happiness. It's about guns and bombs and children in sweatshops. It's about the deaths of good people like Paul Wellstone and Mel Carnaghan. It's about greed and the seemingly unquenchable thirst for things that we want but do not need. And it's about hope.

I've had a revelation recently that together we can accomplish anything. We can indeed live free - all of us - If. We can liberate the world if the few of us who have so much are willing to let go of some of what we have or want. I saw a bumper sticker that says it all: "Live simply so others may simply live."

    Wonder Why

I wait for you to open me
To stir a little hope in me
Together we can run and race the sky
A crown of thorns, a laurel wreath
Some win, some lose, some lie beneath
And some of us stand still wonder why

    It's never justified
    And greed's never satisfied
It takes 'til you’ve got nothing left to give
That wanting what we do not need
Creates the monster that we feed
Let's cast it off, be free, and simply live

A flash of light, a good man gone
    The tragedy that lingers on
We raise our heads and scream up to the sky
The questions asked no answer’s free
    The media keep telling me
And more of us begin to wonder why

    Chorus

The little girls in sweatshops who
Have sewn the clothes we wear and who
Sit in darkness seeing little sky
Taken from or sent by them
    Their parents need a stratagem
Their children slave why don’t we wonder why?

    Chorus

    A gun, a bomb, a hidden mine
Anyone one can see the signs
It shouldn't take a missile from the sky
When death is caused, we’re all made small
Yet love can make us all walk tall
And Mother earth can sing and tell us why

    Chorus
